Analyzing the Explanation Structure of Procedural Texts: Dealing with Advice and Warnings
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present the explanation structure of procedural texts, focusing on the analysis of argumentation, in particular advice and warnings. Their role is to support and motivate the goal-instruction structure, which is the skeleton of procedural texts. Procedural texts consist of a sequence of instructions, designed with some accuracy in order to reach a goal (e.g. assemble a computer). Procedural texts may also include subgoals. Goals and subgoals are most of the time realized by means of titles and subtitles. The user must carefully follow step by step the given instructions in order to reach the goal. We introduce the notion of instructional compound, which is a complex structure that articulates instructions with various discourse elements. We then show how arguments can be extracted with the help of patterns. We finally investigate their contribution to the structure and the understanding of procedural texts.

Creating and Querying a Domain dependent Know-How Knowledge Base of Advices and Warnings
In this paper, we present the explanation structure of procedural texts, that supports and motivates the goal-instruction structure. We focus in particular on arguments, and show how arguments of type warnings and advices can be extracted. Finally, we show how a domain dependent knowhow textual knowledge base can be constructed and queried.
متن کاملInvestigating the Structure of Procedural Texts for Answering How-to Questions
This paper presents ongoing work dedicated to parsing the textual structure of procedural texts. We propose here a model for the intructional structure and criteria to identify its main components: titles, instructions, warnings and prerequisites. The main aim of this project, besides a contribution to text processing, is to be able to answer procedural questions (How-to? questions), where the ...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Persuasive Strength of Arguments in Procedural Texts
Argumentation (e.g. (Amgoud et al 2001, Moeschler 1985)) and, in particular, persuasive argumentation is a process frequently encountered in several types of exts where the challenge is to convince the reader to adhere to a certain point of view. Arguments come with forms of emphasis which give them more strength than normally expected, or, conversely, they may come with forms of irony or of de...
متن کاملAn Exploration of the Diversity of Natural Argumentation in Instructional Texts
Instructional texts consist of sequences of instructions designed in order to reach an objective. The user must follow step by step the instructions in order to reach the results expected. In this short paper, we explore the different facets of natural argumentation used in such texts. Our study is based on an extensive corpus study, and within a language generation perspective. 1 General typol...
متن کاملProcedural Modeling as an Analytical Tool for 3D Survey in Urban Design Assessment
This paper examines procedural modeling as a tool for 3D modeling creation. Procedural modeling historically has been used for 3D visualization of natural features, but with the release of the software CityEngine in 2008, the technology can easily be adopted also in problem domains dealing with urban environments. Then, we will examine and compare two types of modeling, traditional and proc...
